Operator notes

Penis Envy is a line of Psilocybe cubensis known for a thick, dense stem and a small cap that often stays closed. Albino Penis Envy (APE) is its pale form. Both are sold as cultures and grow bags, and both have a reputation for strength. This site sets out what is behind that reputation, panel by panel, with a source for every figure on the dials above.

What the instruments say

  • Content. In the only peer-reviewed comparison, Penis Envy contained 17.59 mg of tryptamines per gram of dried mushroom, second of 14 strains, and APE 12.33 mg/g, fifth (lab data).
  • Growth. On potato dextrose agar, APE mycelium covered 30.5 percent of a plate in 25 days, where B+ covered all of it (growing).
  • Origin. The story of McKenna, Pollock and the Amazon was corrected by its main source in 2021 and is documented by no one (origin).
  • Law. A grow bag is legal to buy in the Netherlands; the mushrooms are illegal once they appear, and illegal in the UK, Germany and under US federal law (the law).

Why the numbers matter

A gram of Penis Envy in that study held about one and a half times the total of a Golden Teacher cross grown beside it, and single mushrooms of one strain varied with a coefficient of variation of up to 23 percent. A portion judged by habit from another cultivar can be much stronger than intended. The effects and risks page explains what that means in practice, with the combinations to avoid.

The grow bag in the slot

The bag in the product slot is the APE grow bag from Dutch-Smart: 2,100 g of substrate, fully colonised, no activation step. The shop marks it as advanced. If you are new to growing, the grow bag guide compares it with B+, Golden Teacher and two Penis Envy descendants, from forgiving to demanding.

Reading this site

Each page is a readout for one question, with a spec strip of its key values at the top and labelled panels below. Start with what Penis Envy looks like if you want to recognise it, or with the lab data if you want to know how strong it is. This site is published by the team behind Dutch-Smart; the about page explains how we work. Adults only.
